M J shows A K off suit and Eber Q 6 suited in spades

Flop: 5 7 K all hearts

Turn: 8 - hope for Eber who now has  a straight draw

River: J - it's all over

Ryan Eber is eliminated in 2nd place and wins R 500,000.

M J Pieters is the new All Africa Poker Champion and wins R1 million.

Ryan Eber will tell people that he lost All Africa with 4 2 and M J Pieters

will tell people that he won All Africa with A K. Both will be true.

Good night from me George "Bullets" Kramvis, we will chat over the

internet again in November!

Hand 121:

Ryan completes and we see a flop.

Flop: 7 5 3 - Eber bets 140k and M J calls

Turn: A - Ryan bets 250k and again M J makes the call again

River: 8 Eber bets 400k, and M J goes all-in. Eber snap-calls and we go to the showdown.

In a hand made for television, Ryan Eber turned the straight with a 4 2 but M J Pieters had already flopped the higher straight with 6 4!

A huge double up for M J and Eber is left with less than 200k and a feeling of "what just happened?"!

Hand 90: A 220k raise from UTG by Ryan is good enough for the win.

Hand 91: Bennie raises all-in from his button and gets called by M J in the small blind for 495k. Bennie is utterly horrified because he was clearly trying a steal! He did not want to show his cards but eventually turned over a 6s 4s! M J had made the call with a Kc Qc

Hand 74: Matt Train moves all-in and wins the hand.

Hand 75: Bennie raises to 130k but Kramer's horse moves all-in again and puts Bennie under pressure. The nickname of "Horsey" may just stick to Matt Train after Kramer's repeated cries from the gallery. Bennie eventually lets go and Matt Horsey Train shows 9 9. Bennie exposes an Ace.

Flop: 6c 9c 9s - Train flops a set to Eber's obvious disgust!

Turn: 2h - Eber looking for the miracle now

No help for a very unlucky Eber and the protégé of Kramer seems to have inherited some of his luck. A huge double up for Matt and Eber is looking a little ragged.

Hand 41: Neil flat calls the 40k from middle position but Chris raises to 80k from the button. Thomas has had enough and shoves in the remainder of his diminishing stack. Neil gets out of the way and it is another 143k for Chris to make the call.

The big winners of the first session are Bennie, Chris and Thomas who all added to their stack whilst Neil has lost the largest percentage of his. Ryan is as stable as ever and still comfortably in the lead although the gap has closed and there are more serious contenders.

Sham doesn't want to gamble

Jul.31, 2010

Hand 31: Thomas flat calls the blinds from early position and M J obliges with a check from the BB.

And in the last hand before dinner:

Hand 34: Robbie Sham raises to 100k from early position but his party is spoiled by Thomas Toich's all-in from the SB.

Robbie folds and shows J J! Thomas obliges and shows A Q. It would have been a race but Robbie did not want to gamble at this stage - had he won the hand however, he would have been in great position for the second half of the final table.

It is dinner time. Play will commence again at 20h30.

M J gets stronger

Jul.31, 2010

He eventually lets go and Sham shows A K for top pair. Mrs Lingenfelder adds her two cents worth with a "Ja skelm jockey."

Hand 29: Bennie in the mix again with a raise to 85k. No customers this time.

Hand 30: M J raises to 80k from under the gun and is called by Thomas and Matt. Neil also makes the call from the small blind. The pot is at 374k.

Flop: 8h Ks Qs - Neil checks and M J continues by betting 200k. Noone liked the bet and M J takes down the hand. He flips over K Q for top two pair!

A few more hands remain before the dinner break.

Mr and Mrs Lingenfelder

Jul.31, 2010

Hand 25: Chris raises from the SB to 74k. Thomas in the BB moves all-in and it is another 202k for Chris to make the call. He eventually does and the red all-in lights come on.

Gordon the grinder

Hand 23:

Chris raises from middle position to 72k. Robbie moves all-in inspiring the blinds to get out of the way and it is another 146k for Chris to make the call. After much muttering Chris exclaims that it's a sham (I bet Robbie has never heard that one before) and folds his hand.

Hand 24: Anthony Gordon in the cutoff survives without any raises before him, so he makes his all-in move with almost no fold equity for his last 53k. Chris Convery has to make the call for another 23k from the BB.

Anthony shows Qh 5h and Chris A 7

Flop: 10 7 8

Final Table experience, Will it count?

Jul.31, 2010

Three of our ten finalists have been under the spotlight before.

Frano Lottering came sixth in the February 2009 Tournament earning R225,000. He will certainly be trying to improve on that performance and with at least ten rotations in hand, he will have a fair chance.

This will be Ryan Eber's 5th All Africa final table! With winnings of over R1,5 million in his previous four cashes including a fourth place finish, two thirds and a win, he is the man to beat. He also has a massive advantage in that he holds 26% of the chips currently in play and out chips his nearest rival by 2:1. As it stands, Ryan Eber must be the favourite for his second title.

Chris Convery is the man who has managed to convert his final table appearances into wins. In his previous three final tables he has come 9th once and taken every single chip on the other two occasions. He has slightly less than Eber in total winnings only because his first win was only worth R400,000 in the early days of the tournament. With an above average stack and lying third in chips, Chris will be the most dangerous competitor at the final table.

As to the other seven players facing the bright lights and the TV cameras for the first time... Good Luck Gents.

The Final Table Decided

Congratulations to the final ten. Well played and well done to get so far. The first hurdle has been successfully navigated and now the last big one awaits. Playing for R1 million!

MJ Pieters 834,000

Chris Convery 701,000

Neil Andrews 533,000

Robert Sham 451,000

Frano Lottering   368,000

Matt Train   354,000

Thomas Toich   272,000

Anthony Gordon  165,000

Play will start again at 5pm when we will be reporting hand for hand.

Dayani Bubbles

Jul.31, 2010

Hagai Dayani held out and held out but it was all to no avail. He did get it in with the best of it against Chris Convery but his luck did not hold out. His A Q was out flopped by Convery's A J and never caught up.

Hagai Dayani bubbles at the 21st All Africa Poker Tournament in 11th position. For his excellent play he does get an entry into the November 2010 All Africa Poker Tournament.

Well played Hagai!

Darren Kramer wins R2 million in one week

Darren Kramer won the March 2010 All Africa Poker Tournament (AAPT) taking place at Piggs Peak Casino Swaziland over the weekend, taking home a cool R1 million in prize money and his second AAPT title. What makes this win even more amazing is the fact that he had won the Piggs Peak R2 million online tournament earlier in the week, taking down the R1 million first prize there as well – and becoming the latest online poker milionaire.

The local online poker pro came into the AAPT feeling very relaxed and confident. His play throughout the tournament was smooth, calm and collected, ensuring he remained close to the top in just about every chip count, enabling to follow his strategy of playing the best decision based poker and not a game dictated solely by the cards he had. He was chip leader for most of the day on Saturday's final day play after starting the day in fourth. Going into the final table he was chip leader with 1,738,000 – nearly double that of the second placed player. The new, higher blinds structure ensured that the smaller stacks were regularly eliminated throughout the day until only two remained – KingKramer and Conrad Coetzer, playing in his first AAPT.

Going into heads up play Darren had almost three and a half times the chips of his opponent, with 5,210,000. This meant he could dictate play and it wasn't long before he talked Conrad into going all-in on a marginal hand to determine the championship. The final hand came down to the river, with Darren's luck holding out once again. Conrad moved all-in with J 9 and
Kramer called with his A 7. The
flop 9 7 Q, putting Conrad ahead with the higher pair. The turn card was a Q, ensuring that the tension mounted for both players. But with a movie script-type ending
Kramer won the March 2010 All Africa Poker Tournament and becomes a multiple champion when anther A fell on the river. Extremely elated at his success Kramer told reporters that he actually considered not attending the tournament following his online win. “Its been an incredible week for me and I am very glad I came to the tournament in the end,” he said. “This is always such a well orgainsed event, and was very enjoyable. I am really glad I came though, as now I can pay a few bills!”

The final standings and prize winners are:

  1. Darren Kramer: R1,000,000

  2. Conrad Coetzer: R500,000

  3. Gilbert Basilio: R300.000

Play has been a lot tighter today, as the final few players via for the final table.

The AAPT did announce this morning that an extra R70,000 had been added to the prize pool, moving the bubble up one level to 12th place. The 11th placed player will win the R70,000 and 12th place will secure a seat at the next All Africa Poker.

AAPT day 2 wrap

Its been a long, hard day of poker, with a number of upsets. A lot of the big names haven't gone deep at this tournament, including BLUFF SA first placed player Eugene du Plessis, 3rd ranked Jay Sookoo, 7th ranked Ryan Brauer, 9th ranked David Rosenthal, 11th ranked Michael Gossayn, 16th ranked Daniel Lamberti and 5th placed Rudolph Fourie. Defending champion Ilija Martinovis (15th) was extremely upset to be knocked out without at least making it to the final table.

The ranked players still in the running include Nic Zakhem (12th), Joe Rahme (23rd), Darren Kramer (22nd) and Ray Rahme (24th). Ray, as always looks like he could take it all the way, but my eye is on Kramer who, after a huge R1 million win in an online tournament earlier in the week, is looking really relaxed and enjoying himself. Two million rand wins in a week would really make 2010 his year. Mauro De Rose is looking good with a huge chip stack, while Conrad Coetzer has been playing really well all day. David Dadic is still also in, so we are in for a very interesting Saturday morning to see who makes it to the final 10. Martie Faber is also hanging in there with her small stack, but is proving very plucky.

Play is set to resume at 09h00 on Saturday with blinds at 7000/14000 (1000 ante).

At lunch, day 2 – lots of action today

Its been a crazy period between the start and lunch. We have seen some big names fall out very early – but there are still 83 players left in the field at lunch. This is due to the high numbers of chips in play, as well as more players. Possibly the biggest upset of the day has to be Daniel Lamberti being knocked out by Ryan Brauer, on what many have the dubbed the table of death (today's feature table). We caught Lambo on his way out of the poker hall: “Obviously I am disappointed, I wanted to go deep at this tournament, but these things happen. It was a tough table with so many great players drawing a seat there yesterday.” Other big names to leave include Rudolph Fourie, David Spangenberg and David “Bozo” Rosenthal. “It was a tough re-buy session for me – I ended up doing the re-buy and the add-on. After that I played more solid, but went out on a bit of cougar, so I am very disappointed,” says Bozo. “This is the earliest I have been out in the tournament.” When asked about his predictions for the rest of the tournament, Bozo says its tough to call at this stage with so many chips in play. “I have never seen so many players still in at this stage. I would like to see some of the Krugersdorp boys make it and some of feature table players.”

Currently the blinds are at 800/1600 (200 ante) with the average stack at 75,000. Plat resumes at 14h30.

Day 1 wrap from AAPT

With day 1 in the bag we take a look at some of the aggressive play that was perpetrate by a few players. Lolly Jackson has been the most aggressive player by far, He has gone all-in at least 5 or 6 times since 22h00, and called a number of other all-ins at his table, which includes the largest number of big name players with Ryan Brauer, Daniel Lamberti, Wessel Jacobs and Jay Sookoo. Conrad Coetzer has also been very aggressive on this table, with Brauer playing a solid game and is by far the chip leader on the table going into day 2.

Lolly says he hopes he can get some cards he can play with tomorrow as he hasn't been hitting anything on the flop, so he has been trying to bluff his way through. “I don't think I have been raising enough to keep the calibre of player we have at our table from calling my bluff,” he says. “The re-buy period has meant I can make it through to tomorrow. Its going to be another tough day as I have to deal with Ryan (Brauer), Daniel Lamberti, Conrad, Jay, Mr. Sun and Wessel Jacobs.

The main table and table 4 also had a number of all-in moments today already. You can read about them on the All Africa blog (http://blog.allafricapoker.com).

We have lost 5 players on day 1 – namely Selwyn Shandel, Jacques Smit, Wouter Lombard, Roy Viviers and Henry Janson. 114 players will take to the felt tomorrow to battle it out for the R1 million first prize. Play starts at 09h00 and Nic Zakhem is chip leader, with 165,200 chips. Ray Rahme is second, Rob Lay third and Ryan Brauer fourth, all with over 100,000 chip stacks. Next update will be at lunch on Friday.

Report by: Matthew Beckett, Ace High Poker

The past weekend's Royal Swazi Rumble was a watershed moment in African poker, which will hopefully be described as the South African equivalent of the “Moneymaker Effect”. The largest field in Africa for 2010 descended on the ensconced country of Swaziland to take part in the fourth edition of the Royal Swazi Rumble, proudly hosted by Ace High Poker, to tough it out for a prize pool of R1 million. Described by many players as the premier tournament in Southern Africa, the weekend produced some of the most memorable moments in African poker history.

On a warm Friday afternoon, 112 Players excitedly poured into the Royal Swazi Spa and Hotel, eager to get down to the business end of the weekend. A couple of the early birds were sitting outside by the pool and hot tub, sipping on the Royal Swazi's speciality cocktails, and all around, laughter and joking could be heard as players and old acquaintances regaled past poker battles between each other. As the dust settled and the sun went down, a palpable silence fell over the hotel as the players became more and more anxious about the forthcoming tournament. At precisely 8:00 after the welcome from hotel management and Ace High Poker, the words “shuffle up and deal” were uttered, and the players knuckled down to the felt and started playing some serious poker. The first evening’s play could only be described as a slaughter, with 21 of the starting 112 players knocked out before the end of the evening's play. Among those 21 were some of South Africa’s most notable tournament players.

Saturday's pace was steadier, with players falling out at regular intervals throughout the day. This also included some of the big names in South African poker, who lost out to a few of the tournament big stacks. A final break for a delicious dinner was the last stop before the field was whittled down to the final table of nine players.

On Sunday morning, when play started up again, there were only two people who were ever really competing for first place. Herman van Staaden, and seasoned WSOP player Warren Zackey. Many players tried to stand up to the two chip leaders, but were brushed aside mercilessly, with Zackey and van Staaden regularly adding chips to their already gigantic stacks.

Among the players at the final table were a number of new faces, such as Robbie Sham, Agostino Gaglio, Brian McLean, Herman van Staaden, Paul van der Westhuizen, Hugh van der Westhuizen and Francis Moodley. The seasoned pros at the table were past winner Gareth Kalil – who had fought his way back from as little as 10,000 chips at one point (when the blinds were 10000/20000) and Warren Zackey, who started the final table as second chip leader.

As mentioned earlier, it seemed like a surefire battle between Warren Zackey and Herman van Staaden for who would take the honours. But for a brief moment, Paul van der Westhuizen came within a whisker of being up there after a notable hand, where Paul had J 10 and Francis had 10 5. The flop came 3 4 6 all spades, and the turn brought a 10 to pair both players up. Francis moved all in and was instantly called by Paul. The river brought no help to either player and Paul briefly moved to within 50,000 chips of Warren. However this boost was short lived as, with three players remaining, Paul moved all in with A J for 700,000 chips, with blinds at 10000/20000. He was instantly called by Warren who flipped over pocket Aces. The flop brought a Jack, but unfortunately the turn and river didn't bring any reprieve for Paul, who left R150,000 richer but a bit disappointed nonetheless. For his first tournament of over 20 players, this was quite a showing, so you can be sure he’ll be back next time to try and better this result!

This left Warren Zackey and Herman fighting it out for the R300,000 first prize and the and the trophy, generously sponsored by local firm Ngwenya Glass. After about 10-15 hands Warren managed to get Herman to push all his chips in the middle with 5 5. Warren turned over his pocket jacks, and a flop of J 10 A all but sealed the victory for Warren. With nothing falling for Herman,

What will hopefully make this weekend the tipping point in South African poker is the success of Herman van Staaden who, back in January won on a promotional freeroll tournament in Pretoria, hosted by TUKS FM and Pokerpros, to secure a seat into the Royal Swazi Rumble tournament. One week before the tournament Herman phoned the offices of Ace High and said that due to circumstances beyond his control he may not be able to make it to Swaziland, but he dutifully shuffled a couple of things around and managed to make it, after borrowing money just to get down to Swaziland. For large parts of the weekend he went unnoticed, quietly sitting at his table playing his cards and feeling slightly intimidated in his first major live tournament. In fact he’s only been playing poker for 4 months. But by the end of the second day when there were nine people remaining, Herman was at the front of the pack – sitting pretty with 1 million chips, or almost 1/3 of the chips in play.

After the hard fought final table, when Herman was presented with his winner’s cheque, he walked outside, phoned his mother and when he got off of the phone broke down in the middle of the hotel reception. This is the story of someone who went from being an unheard of student, to an inspiration to many new and aspiring poker players out there. He beat out some of the best local players, like Jay Sookoo, Ryan Dreyer, Dave Rosenthal, Bennie Lingenfelder, in the largest tournament in Southern Africa this year.

The Second Chance tournament attracted 100 players, and with a prize pool of R200,000 offered up a lifeline to those players who had been eliminated from the main event. The final two brought a Swazi local up against one of the better known South African players – Zlatko Dobronic. After a tense heads up battle, the players agreed to split the remaining prize money, and play one hand for the title and trophy. Neil Butler the local Swazi player took the 2nd Chance tournament and a nice payout for first place!

All-in-all it was an excellent tournament, organised by Ace High Poker and hosted by the Royal Swazi Spa. The casino staff were friendly and excellent and the pool was always a welcome blessing after a long hard day on the poker floor. This is truly a tournament that sets the bar for poker in South Africa.

Player’s views on the Royal Swazi Rumble Tournament:

Clinton Nourse:

I have a good feeling about this tournament. It is a nice tournament with a good blind structure. There is a pretty strong field at the moment…. I am sitting at a nice table where there are a couple of decent player’s seated with me.

Bennie Lingerfelder:

My hopes are high although there is a very competitive field out there. So I am hoping for the best, I will just take the tournament as it comes.

Nicholas Zakhem:

I feel like I may do well in this tournament if I play my cards right…. Therefore, I am going to play very conservatively. On my table there is already one player out. I must admit, I have not been getting good cards but I am hanging in there. I am sure I will progress.

First Hand that was Knocked Out:

*Mike Glossayn*

I was on the BB. Pieter Taljaard raised under the gun and I called with JQ suited… the flop came Queen of spades, 10 of hearts and 5 of diamonds. I bet, he re-raised, I called. The turn came 8 of diamonds.... I raised and Pieter pushed all in where I called because I put him on AK pre-flop; he turned over AQ and the river came 5 of hearts knocking me out.

First break for the first evening chips stacks are as follows:

  1. Warren Zackey- 78 100

A hand to remember before closing for the evening:

An extremely friendly Lamberti was kind enough to discuss why he is currently sitting on 45,000 chips

Lamberti told me that despite a patient start; he had one great hand that allowed him to sit above chip average.

Lamberti picked up pocket 5’s against A/J unsuited and the flop fell Ah, Jc, 5d.

After some trap betting on Lamberti's part, he clearly picked up a great pot, which has left him 10 000 chips above average as well as a top contender in this tournament!!!!!

Good Luck Lamberti!!!
